Diversions to last month at Ash Lane

- By PAUL DEERING

Severe traffic congestion is expected over the next six weeks along a vital link road through Sligo as road a pavement works get underway.

A pavement overlay contract began on Monday and will involve the complete renewal of the pavement along the N16 at Ash Lane and Duck Street (Ballinode Stores to Feehilys Funeral Home).

These works are anticipated to last for approximately six weeks. It is expected that eastbound traffic will remain on the N16 for the duration of the works.

However, the council says that for a period of approximately four weeks diversions will be in place for all westbound traffic.

Traffic on the N16 will be diverted along Clarion Road and Ballytivnan Road before re-entering the N16 at the Duck Street roundabout.

This diversion will commence at 9:30am on Monday morning next 12 th February and will be clearly signposted.

“This diversion will inevitably give rise to traffic delays and congestion, particularly during morning and evening peak times.

“We would urge all motorists to exercise caution when travelling along the diversion route as the road width is narrow in places.

“There are also a number of primary schools, second and third level colleges and residential areas along the route,” said a council spokesperson.

He added that throughout the duration of the N16 contract the traffic management plan may vary. We will endeavour to keep you informed of all/any such changes.

The council has received a significant allocation of funds from Transport Infrastructure Ireland for progressing road improvement projects in the coming year. The Council’s total National Roads Allocation for the year is in excess of €17.5 million. Included in this is an allocation of around €4.5m which is specifically for the repair of existing pavements on the N15 (Bundoran Road), N16 (Manorhamilton Road) and N17 (Galway Road) National Primary network.

Upcoming works: N16 Phase 2 (AbbVie roundabout to Ballinode Stores) commencing April 2018 :N15 Resurfacing Contract (Topaz Service Station to Scotsmans Walk) commencing June 2018; N59 Resurfacing Contract (Ballisodare to Ballydrehid) commencing c. June 2018.
