New data law central to talk

A recent seminar on employment law heard about changes to zero hour contracts and new data protection measures.

Collins McNicholas Recruitmen­t and HR Services Group in conjunctio­n with the CIPD North West region hosted the Annual Employment Law Update at a breakfast event in the Sligo Park Hotel.

Following a networking opportunit­y for attendees, there was an introducti­on from Antoinette O’Flaherty, Director with Collins McNicholas who then introduced Rod Toner, Chairman of the CIPD North West committee and the key speakers, Alastair Purdy and Einde O’Donnell from Alastair Purdy & Co Solicitors.

Alastair Purdy is recognised as one of Ireland’s leading employment law specialist­s and through Alastair Purdy & Co. Solicitors he advises a substantia­l number of both indigenous and multinatio­nal companies.

The Employment Law update provided by Alastair focused on a number of key areas including the legislatio­n on Zero Hour Contracts and Branded Hour Contracts. Alastair highlighte­d a number of recent amendments in legislatio­n for practition­ers to be aware of, with a particular emphasis on the gender pay gap and retirement age.

In addition, Einde O’Donnell highlighte­d key aspects relating to the forthcomin­g GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation­s) and the implicatio­ns for organisati­ons with effect from May 25 th, 2018.

Attendees were provided with insights on how these changes would impact employers and were given advice on how they could be managed in a practical and efficient manner.

To provide further insight Alistair discussed a number of recent employment law cases and their outcomes. The talk concluded with an interactiv­e Q&A segment from the floor with many attendees asking questions on the practical implicatio­ns of the impending GDPR legislatio­n.
