Mugendo event in IT Sligo
FOR the tenth year Sligo Mugendo have hosted the Open Kickboxing event in Sligo’s Institute of Technology.
Originally this event was for juniors only, but in the past two years it has expanded to include seniors as well. This year Muguendo Spain travelled for the event for the first time.
This is a sister club of Sligo Mu- guendo from Bilbao, in Spain who originated in the World Mugengo organisation some twenty years ago.
The tournament has expanded this year to include some new disciplines, such as a Grand Champion event in points and light contact which is sponsored by the Clayton Hotel, Sligo, and known as ‘Queen & King of the Clayton.
Another new discipline is ‘kick light’, which allows competitors to kick to the legs above the knee with control. This proved to be a very popular event and is a progressive event for the Mugendo Open.
The event was opened by Hubert Keaney, the mayor of Sligo and Dianne Middleton represent- ed the Sligo Sports Partnership.
The event catered for over 500 athletes over the two days and but for the snow on Sunday which saw two buses abandon their journey for safety reasons a bigger crowd would have attended. Michael Mc Dermott, the organizer thanked all who attended and made the event another great kickboxing event for Sligo.
