IT Sligo defeat DCU

THE college students of IT Sligo got off to great start in this year’s championship campaign as they had too much for DCU in the opening round of the Lynch Cup.

IT Sligo had three Sligo seniors in the starting team Lauren Boles, Denise McGrath and Sinead Naughton and all three played big part in the win for the home side.

DCU set up very defensive, playing two sweepers which didn’t help their cause as Sligo ran into a 6-0 point lead and it got worse for the Dublin side when captain of IT Sligo and Roscommon senior Shiela Brady went on a run and finished to the back of the net.

DCU had Sligo’s Michelle McNamara in defence but her best efforts couldn’t stop the flow of attacks coming.

McGrath was beginning to play a big part at corner forward as the score at the break saw the home side lead comfortably 1-10 to 0-1.

Whatever chance of a comeback was put to bed when Aoife Corbett the corner forward scored two goals in the space of two minutes as IT Sligo were in complete control at this stage.

There was still time for one more goal when Eileen McKenna fired the ball to the net. Next up for IT Sligo is the meeting with Garda College next Wednesday and the team is managed by Gavin Cawley.
