Girls rugby is flourishing at Sligo RFC with first U15s team
AMONG the areas being pushed for development in 2018 at Sligo Rugby Club is the promotion of the girls teams. The club’s underage element is thriving and with the return of the juveniles to Hamilton Park after a lengthy spell in IT Sligo, there is lots going on with the club’s young teams.
Last weekend the U12 girls played in the Aviva during Ireland’s Six Nations game with Italy. This is the first year that the club has fielded a U15 girls team and even though they have only recently been established, they are doing phenomenally well and have qualified for the Connacht Cup quarter final.
The girls U13s and U15s teams were recently presented with new jerseys, shorts and socks from sponsor Pet Stop and the club said it’s very grateful for the sponsorship of new gear.
The girls U10 and U12s teams are busy training on Saturday mornings from 10am.
They recently travelled to an-all Connacht blitz in Galwegians where they represented themselves and the club very well.
The girls U13s train also train on Saturdays and again on Tuesdays at 18:30pm.
The club recently hosted a North Connacht blitz
where the girls proved they were a match for the other clubs involved.
Indeed in the game of the day, against neighbours Ballina, they came back form 2 tries to nil down at half time to win by 3 tries to 2.
The girls U15s recently qualified for the Connacht Cup quarter final and are busy preparing to host Claremorris on the 17th of February. This is the first year Sligo RFC have fielded a team at this age group and the progress year to date from this group of girls has been phenomenal. The team is a blend of girls who have come up through juveniles section
and girls who are in their first year of rugby. They train on Tuesdays at 18:30pm.
