At a glance - what’s planned for Sligo as a regional centre.
Sligo University Hospital
The proposed redevelopment of Sligo University Hospital comprises a replacement ward block, theatre department and ED. Funding has been allocated to progress the design and planning phase in 2018 and it is expected construction could commence in 2021/22. In the meantime ,it is also proposed to replace the Central Sterile Services Department on a phased basis with completion expected by 2020. Two other developments at Sligo (diabetic centre and interventional radiology suite) are also being progressed and expected to be completed by 2020/21.
A new acute mental health unit is also being developed. Enabling works have been completed on site and construction is projected to commence in 2020 for completion in 2021.
Primary Care Centres
Construction of the new PCCs in Ballymote and Boyle in north Roscommon is now complete as part of the PPP programme. The HSE is also developing a new Primary Care Centre at Nazareth House.
Sligo Western Distributor road
The development of this road is required in connection with providing access to a new IDA Business Park at Oakfield, Sligo. The project has planning and it is expected that construction will commence in 2018 and be completed in 2020.
N4 Collooney to Castlebaldwin
The project will replace a section of the N4 between Dublin and Sligo to improve road safety.
Garavogue Bridge Scheme
This project will allow for the regeneration of eastern parts of Sligo City and for the ongoing development of the region.
N4 Carrick on Shannon
This objective of this road development project is to improve the capacity and journey time on the N4, improve access to the West and North West and to relieve traffic congestion in Carrick on Shannon. It is planned to move the project through the appraisal and planning stages.
N17 Knock to Collooney
This will be progressed through pre-appraisal and early planning during 2018 to be prioritised for construction in the National Development Plan.
Social Housing
Of the 440 additional social housing units in current delivery, specific examples include projects at: Collooney, Sligo 15 homes; and in Sligo Town, Knappagh Road, 28 new homes and Fr. Flanagan Terrace, 22 homes
IT Sligo
Establishment of the Connacht Ulster Alliance (CUA) consortium consisting of Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT), Institute of Technology Sligo, and Letterkenny Institute of Technology.
Rural Regeneration and Development
Investment projects in towns and villages with populations of less than 10,000 in Sligo will be in a position to benefit from a new Rural Regeneration and Development Fund which will invest €1bn in promoting rural renewal in Ireland, to help towns, villages and rural areas to grow in a sustainable way.
