Wellbeing so important for success

significance (to be seen and validated for who you are and what you do), love and connection, growth and making a contribution. These are also useful to reflect on to work out what success looks like to you.

These six Human Needs influence our deepest motivations and determine how we prioritize decisions and actions through life.

How to get success? Sean Gallagher, speaking at a recent Wexford Chamber and Wexford County Council event gave an inspirational speech with pearls of wisdom from his upcoming book, “The Secrets of Success”. He reminded us about Darwin’s teachings: It is not always the strongest but the best at adapting that survives. You got to show up and be there to be successful. The ability to embrace change is fundamental. He also emphasized the importance of having an effective strategy, taking action, leadership (which he defined as doing the right thing and not just doing things right) and perseverance for success.

We thrive when there is more to do, not when we have done it all. What we value changes as we achieve, age and live life. Once you have attained something, your bar raises and your focus shifts. What you define as your world often changes too.

Another part of Sean’s advice for success was ‘Get up early, work hard and stay the course’. Most apparent over-night successes I have ever heard of were preceded by at least 10 years of hardwork. It doesn’t always appear like that in the sound bites but it is like that behind the scenes.

Self-belief is key. Doubts have to be worked through and each step and so-called failure will teach you something. The near misses we have on the road to success while disappointing bring us closer to reaching the target.

Oscar Wilde used to say: ‘Be Yourself, everyone else is already taken’. You are unique. You are special. You are one of a kind. It is up to you to define what success feels, means and looks like to you based on what is important to you and your strengths.

This is your book of life and only you can write it. Invest in what you value. Nourish it. Love it. Develop it. No one starts a big business. In Africa, the say it takes a village to raise a child. It takes a team to realise a dream. Infect others with your enthusiasm and drive.

Sean shared many gems. ‘You cannot be what you cannot see’. Look at others doing whatever it is you want to do and learn from them. And bring your best self and unique gifts to the mix.

You are the master of your destiny. “Most everything that you want is just outside your comfort zone.” Jack Canfield.

I wish you a great journey to success starting now.
