The Sligo Champion

Ladies fall short in Waterford

- BY KEITH GILROY

WATERFORD ladies met Sligo in Round 4 of the Lidl National football league on Sunday in the WIT sports campus.

Sligo made the journey south in the hope of picking up their first points of this campaign.

Lisa Casey and Michelle Ryan exchanged the opening points for both sides before Eimear Farrell added a second for Waterford. Maira Delahunty was at the fore of the Waterford attack and she added two points for the home side to lead four points to one with 15 minutes played. Sligo hit back with Katie Walsh scoring a goal and a point both from frees before Waterford got their goal to lead 1-04 1-02. Back came Sligo again with two more points, one from Sarah Reynolds the second from Nicky Brennan to leave it all level at half time. Sligo found it hard in the second half to get to grips with the fast-free flowing Waterford side who hit 7 points without reply with the aid of a strong wind and it could have got worse for Sligo if it wasn’t for the returning Noelle Gormley in goals making her first start of 2018. Sligo did fight back to bring the score to within 3 points with a point from Katie Walsh and a goal from 17-year-old Louise Merrick who rifled the ball to the roof of the Waterford net. But that was the closest Sligo would come as Aileen Wall secured the game for Waterford scoring 1-02 in the last 4 minutes. Next up for Sligo is the visit of Laois this Sunday to Tourlestrane at 2 pm.
