GREENWAY PLAN
Manorhamilton solicitor Conor Maguire, who is a leading member of the Sligo Leitrim and Northern Counties Railway (SL and NCR) Rail Trail (Greenway) Working Group, has welcomed the recent National Plan’s announcement for a €100 million fund an Irish Greenway Network.
In an enthusiastic Facebook post Conor remarks ‘a new 100 Million Euro fund is announced today in Sligo Town for a National Greenway Network. Let’s connect the Wild Atlantic Way at Sligo Town with the Shannon Erne Waterway in Enniskillen which ticks all the boxes in terms of connectivity.
‘Once it starts the UK will row in too. Let’s stick it in the face of Brexit. Let’s not allow this opportunity to be sucked up and hijacked by the established tourism bases which are already creaking at the seams with traffic and crowds.’.
BERNADETTE’S MBE
When the recent British New Year’s Honours’ list was announced it included the name of a lady with strong North Leitrim links, namely Bernadette Lynch.
Ms Lynch, whose mother is Maureen Rooney from Glencar, was named as an MBE (Member of the British Empire) award recipient based on outstanding work for her services to Government Exports Worldwide.
Maureen Rooney, Bernadette Lynch’s mother, like so many other Irish people at the time who were seeking employment, went to England on the late 1940s. It is understood that an award’s ceremony for the presentation of the New Year’s honourees will take place in London in about two week’s time.
