COMMUNITY RECOGNITION

Tubbercurry Chamber of Commerce and Community Association is hosting a Community Recognition Award Ceremony on St Patrick’s night, March 17 in Cawley’s Hotel, Tubbercurry. The recipients of this year’s award are the Western Drama Festival Committee, who this year are celebrating the 75th year of the founding of the festival.

First held in 1943, the Western Drama Festival has gone from strength to strength and is a firm fixture on the annual calendar of events both in Tubbercurry and in Drama circles throughout Ireland. Indeed, the Western Drama Festival was the first Drama Festival of its kind ever held in Ireland and is a model copied by drama enthusiasts throughout Ireland. The founding fathers of Matt Devine, Alfie Rochford, John A Flannery and Seán O’Dowd, all now deceased, would be very proud if they returned today to see how more recent committees have developed what they established.

Over the last 75 years, the festival has been an integral part of the community and social life in South Sligo and has been highly educational for all attendees over the years. Tubbercurry Chamber of Commerce and Community Association is a vocal outlet and advocat for the entire community and this is an opportunity to say thank you to the many volunteers in this their Diamond Jubilee year.

The evening takes the form of a buffet supper in Cawley’s Hotel on St Patrick’s Night at 8 p.m. There will be a number of speakers, a presentation to the Festival Committee, and a dance/social afterwards to top band, Black Water Jack. This is an ideal way to socialise and say thank you to the many volunteers that make up the Western Drama Festival Committee. The general public are invited to attend and tickets are now available for the event at €35 each from a variety of Chamber members, including, Geraldine Brennan, Gearoid Surlis, John Gillespie and Roger McCarrick.

MARGARET GORMALLY R.I.P.

The recent peaceful death occurred at North West Hospice of Margaret Gormally (née Coleman) late of Castlecawley, Achonry. Pre-deceased by her husband Kevin and in her late 70’s, Margaret was a very pleasant and active lady who worked most of her adult life while still rearing a large family.

She was Post Mistress at Achonry post office for many years till its closure within the last 20 years. This was one of the last rural post offices based in a family home, and it was always a great place for locals to meet up for a chat. After retiring from a working life, she was a very busy Grandmother to 14 grandchildren, and became very involved in the activities of Tubbercurry Active Retirement Association.

She held various officerships in this great Organisation and was very involved in their three publications of history books where her organisational skills and efficiency shined. Stylish and young at heart, Margaret was a role model for others of her generation.

Her remains reposed at Coen’s Funeral Home prior to removal to the Church of the Sacred Heart, Lavagh. Burial took place in Court Abbey Cemetery. Margaret is survived by daughters Christine and Annette, sons Frank, Stephen, David and Denis, brothers William and Joseph, sister Agnes, Joan and Eileen, in-laws, grandchildren and many friends, all to whom sympathy is extended. May she rest in peace.

SR. TERENCE LAWRENCE

The recent peaceful death occurred of Sr. Terence Lawrence of Marist Convent, Carrick-on-Shannon. Age 88, St Terence was a native of Loughill, Cloonacool and had always a special place in her heart for Loughill.

She joined the Marist Sisters on leaving school nearly 70 years ago and worked in the Marist Convents in Tubbercurry and Cornwall, England before returning to Carrick-on-Shannon. Sr. Terence was the last of her siblings to survive, and loved to return to Cloonacool and Tubbercurry for family occasions, celebrations or funerals. She retained a great capacity for remembering names of old family friends and for members of younger generations.

Her remains reposed at the Marist Convent Chapel in Carrick-on-Shannon and burial took place in the Convent Cemetery in Carrick-on-Shannon. Sr. Terence is survived by nieces Celia Faul, Mary Lawrence and Julia Hession, nephew Michael Lawrence, grand nephews and nieces, and her Marist Community, all to whom sympathy is extended. May she rest in peace.

BRIDIE WALSH R.I.P.

Sympathy is extended to Jamsie Walsh, Ballymote Road and his wife Mary on the recent death of Jamsie’s mother Bridie Walsh. In her early 90’s, Bridie was reasonably active till recently and had moved from her home in Coolrecuil in recent years to Corpus Christi in Tourlestrane Village.

Bridie was always a keen Tourlestrane GAA supporter when her sons played with Tourlestrane, but was known to support Tubbercurry on occasions when grandchildren played with Tubbercurry. Pre-deceased by her husband James (Siki) when young, Bridie worked hard all her life to rear their young family. Her remains reposed at the Coen Funeral Home prior to removal to St Attracta’s Church, Tourlestrane. Burial took place in Rhue Cemetery. Bridie is survived by her daughter Anita, sons Patsy, Jamsie, Larry and John, in-laws, grandchildren, relatives and friends. May she rest in peace.

THOMAS CONNOR R.I.P.

The recent peaceful death occurred at his residence of Thomas Connor, late of Rooskey, Doocastle. Thomas had just turned 80 years old, but was always young at heart.

Thomas enjoyed the simple things of life, and was at home with nature, and cutting the turf. As a young man he emigrated briefly to England in the mid 50’s but he found England was not for him, so he returned home. There he farmed and cut and saved turf on the many bogs at Rooskey and Derrikinlough.

He was the caretaker of the grounds around Rooskey Church, a job he took very seriously and was very proud of his work. A photograph of him cutting a bank of turf with the slain appeared many years ago in a book. His remains reposed at the Coen Funeral Home prior to removal to Rooskey Church. Burial took place in Carracastle Cemetery.

Thomas is survived by his sisters Beatrice, who lived at home with him, Mary (Long Island, New York) and Peggy (North Carolina) as well as cousins and good neighbours, all to whom sympathy is extended. May he rest in peace.
