Female progress
Dear Editor,
The last century has seen many changes in the lives of the women of Ireland. Irish women have been elected to Dáil Eireann, the Northern Assembly and the House of Commons. They have twice been elected to the highest office in this land. They have served, with distinction, as Commissioners to the United Nations and the European Union, and as ambassadors throughout the world.
Irish women have brought home Olympic medals, Oscars and literary awards. However, due to Article 40.3.3 of our Constitution, we find ourselves today in the incongruous situation where a Supreme Court justice, an Attorney General, a hospital consultant, a government minister or even a president might find themselves unable to make decisions, in Ireland, on their own reproductive healthcare, by dint of having been born female. It’s time to trust women. Repeal the Eighth Amendment. Bernie Linnane Dromahair, Co. Leitrim.
