COURT HEARS OF REQUEST FOR AN URGENT PSYCHIATRIC EVALUATION OF ACCUSED
A 31-year-old man has been remanded in custody after he appeared in court charged with the murder of Jimmy Loughlin (20) in Sligo.
Richard McLaughlin of City Gate Apartments, Connolly Street, appeared before a sitting of at Donegal Town District Court on Monday charged with the murder of Mr Loughlin at a house at Connolly Street on Saturday.
Evidence of arrest, charge and caution was given by Garda T J Gallagher. McLaughlin made no reply after caution.
Keith O’Grady BL (defending), instructed by Mr Gerard McGovern, solicitor said urgent psychiatric evaluation was warranted in the case.
He told Judge Kevin Kilrane that there was a certain history with local services in Sligo and he asked an urgent medical and psychiatric evaluation be directed.
Mr O’Grady said there is a prescription available for Mr McLaughlin and it should be made available to him in custody. The judge remanded Mr McLaughlin in custody to Harristown District Court on Friday. He also directed Mr McLaughlin be provided with psychiatric assessment and treatment in custody.
