Man made gestures at gardaí, dropped trousers

A 28-year-old man was before Tubbercurr­y District Court charged with public order after making gestures at gardaí and then dropping his trousers.

Charlie Ward of Halting Site, Tubbercurr­y was observed by garda Michael Cunningham at Circular Road in the town on January 11 th 2017. Garda Cunningham told the court he was parked at the entrance to a skip area on Circular Road beside the Fire Station. He observed the defendant coming out of a halting site with another man. He started making gestures towards the garda car which Garda Cunningham and Sergeant Padraig Cunnane . He then dropped his trousers and his buttocks was on show, the garda said. The defendant was in the company of another man at the time and there were numerous vehicles present and the road was busy with cars passing by, Garda Cunningham said.

Mr Morgan Coleman solicitor (defending) said his client was in the company of other family members and there was messing and they were being quite leery. “My client has apologised for his behaviour, it wasn’t directed at the gardaí but to other members of his family,” Mr Coleman said. Judge Kevin Kilrane said it seemed like there was ‘fun and games’ going on. Mr Coleman said his client will not do it again and appreciate­d his behaviour was disrespect­ful.

Ward, who was charged with breaching the peace, was fined €200.
