Seminar on the care and conservation of cemeteries
AS part of the ‘Sligo Community Archaeology Project’ a free seminar on the care and conservation of historic graveyards will be held on the evening of Thursday the 15 th of March at the Sligo Park Hotel at 6.45 pm – 9.30pm.
Burial grounds are sites of heritage, cultural, religious and personal interest to many. Graveyards are an important feature of the historic landscape and frequently provide clues to understanding our past.
Our graveyards contain the remains of our ancestors but they also contain many significant structures, historical and archaeological.
The undisturbed nature of many of these sites can make historic graveyards important refuges for a rich variety of plants and animals.
The aim of the seminar to provide information to local communities on best practice approaches to the management, care and maintenance of historic graveyards.
The seminar will feature a range of speakers covering topics such as architectural and archaeological history as well as the wildlife value of graveyards.
The seminar is aimed at community groups, burial ground committees, heritage groups, ‘ Tidy Towns’ committees, Tús and Rural Social Scheme participants, local authority staff, and anyone who has an interest in local heritage and history.
This seminar on the care and conservation of historic graveyards is an output of the ‘Sligo Community Archaeology Project’.
It is an initiative of Sligo Heritage Forum and is an action of the County Sligo Heritage Plan 2016 – 2020.
