BOIL WATER UNTIL MAY, HOUSEHOLDS ARE ADVISED

Dismay as thousands of householders told cryptosporidium is still in supply

- By PAUL DEERING

It was the news thousands of householders in South Sligo were dreading - a parasite is still present in their water supply and they must continue boiling their water until May at the earliest. Irish Water says that out of 18 samples collected from the Lough Talt Public Water Supply over the past few weeks, six have returned with exceedances for cryptosporidium. A boil water notice was first issued on February 5 and Irish Water says it will remain in place during “the high risk cryptosporidium season” which runs until the end of April/ beginning of May. Weekly sampling will continue until the end of April when all results will be reviewed by the HSE who say there have been no cases of associated illness reported in the community to date. Areas affected include Tubbercurry and Ballymote along with Annagh, Aclare, Bellaghy, Bunninadden, Curry, Lavagh, Ballanacarrow, Carroweden, Kilmacteige, Quarryfield and Coolaney.
