Road widening works in Coolaney

-

ROAD widening works on the road leading up to the proposed National Mountain Biking Centre outside Coolaney begun recently.

These works are part of the funding allocation of €840, 285 for the new National Mountain biking centre located near Coolaney.

Local Fine Gael Cllr Dara Mulvey said it was a step in the right direction.

He said: “I am delighted that this work has started as part of a recent funding allocation of €840,285 for the new National Mountain biking centre to be located just outside Coolaney.

“There has been a huge increase in people taking up mountain biking as a sport which caters for all age groups.

“Coolaney will be another ideal location for people to visit,” Cllr Mulvey pointed out.

Other mountain biking centres located in various parts around the country attract thousand of visitors annually according to Cllr Mulvey.

He said: “I have seen how important mountain biking has been to the economy of communities where biking centres are already located.

“Biking enthusiasts are travelling from all over the country and overseas to experience new locations and I believe the new biking centre to be located in south Sligo can have the potential to draw in excess of 50,000 visitors annually to this region.

“It can become a key location along the Wild Atlantic Way.

“This project will add to making Sligo and the Northwest an Adventure Hub and will attract tourists from far afield and will stimulate employment, development and attract businesses into this region,” added Cllr Mulvey.
