Cornview now astro league favourites

-

CORNVIEW Celtic have one hand on the Premier Division trophy in the Sligo Rovers Astro League, after defeating GSS 4-2 last week to go five points clear at the top.

It proved to be a testing encounter for the league leaders with GSS to their credit, putting it up to Cornview from the start.

Perhaps clinical finishing from Cornview ensured they collected the points, with a brace from the league’s top goal scorer Gareth Kelly and Keith Carty. Sean Taylor and Colm Duffy got on the score sheet for GSS, who have been enjoying a rich vein of form recently.

Foley’s Bar continue to be the only threat to Cornview, after they defeated the Bald Eagles 4-2 also. Goals from John Harvey, Lee Marshall and Eric Mc Morrow ensured the title race continued for another week at least. Seamie Cannon and Jonathan Harte scored for the Eagles.

In the Championship Division, Inter Inferno continues to be the team to catch as they raced six points clear at the top, albeit with two extra games played. They emphatically saw off third place Calry 5-0 with a hat-trick from Ray Mulvey and a brace from Niall Bambrick who recently returned from injury after Christmas.

There was an eight goal thriller between the White Gorillas and Ballymote Celtic, as they played out an end to end 4-4 draw. The Gorillas will be kicking themselves however, as they had a two goal lead going into the final ten minutes of the game.

The division’s top goals corer Marcus Hunt got another brace which was also followed up with goals from Brendan Mc Nulty and Joey Kennedy.

Ballymote remarkably collected a point with goals from Aidan O Brien, Aaron Healy and a double from the ever popular Matthew Mc Grath.

This week sees attention turning to the Open Cup Semi Finals which are sure to have plenty of thrills and spills along the way.

Cornview meet the Bourbon Bar in the first semi final while GSS meet Forrest Celtic in the second.
