The Sligo Champion

SCHOOL FUN DURING ENGINEERS’ WEEK

-

IT Sligo is celebrating a successful Engineers Week after hosting several events with Engineers Ireland Northwest Region.

One of the most popular events of the week was a showcase for budding scientists and was attended by more than 700 primary school children from 16 different schools in Sligo and Leitrim.

During the showcase – called ‘Ireland’s Engineering Superheroes’ by Scientific Sue — children learned about the examples of simple developments in engineering that affect our everyday lives.

The week had kicked off with a fascinating lecture which gave interesting insights on the future growth in the use of electric motor cars and commercial transport vehicles in Ireland. Electric Vehicle Infrastructure and Technology Development was delivered by Joe Mooney, Operations Manager of ESB Cars.

During the week, second and third-year Civil Engineering students were collecting around IT Sligo’s campus and in Sligo town. We are delighted to announce that they collected over €1,000 for the North West Hospice.

The remaining events – which had to be postponed due to the countrywide red weather alert — were held last Thursday.

These events included a secondary school screening of Dream Big: Engineering Our World, and a networking opportunity for both female engineers and students to discuss how to promote engineering as a profession for women.

Michael O’Halloran, Chairman of Engineers Ireland North West region, said: “We were delighted to host so many events with IT Sligo for Engineers Week. It’s been wonderfully busy week and we are thrilled with the response to the events. The presenters and organisers did a fantastic job and we’d like to congratulate everyone involved.”

Úna Parsons, Head of School of Engineering and Design at the Institute of Technology in Sligo said: “We all need to do more to change perceptions about engineering, and we were delighted to see so many people turn up to the events throughout the week. We look forward to the next big event in our calendar, the Engineering Expo in May.”
