Training centre marks tenth year

-

SLIGO Community Training is celebrating 10 years at its Cleveragh premises and to mark the occasion they recently held an Information Morning giving visitors an opportunity to learn more about what they do.

Those who attended were taken on a guided tour of the centre and given firsthand information about the available courses and training allowances.

Visitors to the centre were interested to hear about the many health promoting initiatives and activities which have been taking place to raise awareness about issues such as mental health, recycling, safer internet usage etc.

Having achieved the highest level gold standard in the Health Quality Mark awarded by the National Youth Health Programme run by NYCI and funded by the HSE and the DCYA, it is clearly evident that health promotion underpins everything the centre does.

The centre canteen has retained an Irish Heart Foundation Healthy Eating Award since first achieving it in 2015 and here visitors availed of the opportunity to meet with staff and learners, view information stands, art work and projects while sampling delicious treats baked on site.

Since its establishment in 1984 the centre has gone from strength to strength catering for almost 1900 learners to date.

Sligo CTC relocated to its current premises at Cleveragh Industrial Estate in 2008 where it continues to provide training and education to young unemployed people and early school leavers aged between 16 and 21 years.

Over the years, activities and courses at the centre have developed and expanded, reflecting the changing needs of its learners and the labour market. Currently the courses on offer include computers, sports & recreation, catering, hairdressing and exploring options.

These courses are supported with literacy, numeracy, personal development, art, work-experience and sports activities.

All programmes are QQI certified at levels 3 and 4 on the National Framework of Qualifications giving the young people recognition for their learning in the centre while also facilitating an opportunity to progress to further training.

Alternatively, on completion of their training at Sligo CTC learners have the option to avail of a 6 month link-work programme which together with the support and co-operation of local employers provides relevant in-company training as a vital step towards gaining meaningful employment.

Sligo CTC is currently recruiting for all courses. The training courses are free to participants and ETB Training Allowances of up to €193 apply.

Childcare, rent and travel allowances apply where applicable. Contact the centre (071 9145248, Email enquiries@sligoctc.com.
