The Sligo Champion

It’s a multi-million investment but at this stage all the roadworks are just wearisome

- With PAUL DEERING

ITOTALLY get all the investment and the need for it in Sligo’s water and sewerage works and I’ d be the last to be critical but at this stage if I see another temporary set of traffic lights and a dug up road I’ ll scream.

It’s seriously frustrating to see how long the works are taking and I know Irish Water say the contract is ahead of schedule but there never seems to be any end to the tearing up of the city’s streets.

And, if it wasn’t bad enough to dig up a street once it appears every road has to be dug up at least twice.

And who puts up temporary sets of traffic lights around a corner from permanent lights? It would just drive you around the twist.

It seems to be taking an age to for jobs to be completed. Temporary surfaces are the order of the day and did the workers ever hear of a sweeping brush when the reinstatement works are supposedly completed?

The winter months were bad enough with muck and dirt ruining shoes and clothes but now we’re back into the Spring and a second Summer of works beckons which will mean nothing but dust.

There’s cones and bollards everywhere. The contractors must have forgotten where they left some or what their purpose was.

Take for example the junction across from the Garda Station on Pearse Road opposite Louis Doherty’s shop (pictured).

What is exactly is going on there? The bollards have been in place there for at least six months and nothing is being done to finish the job. It’s unsightly and a mess but as locals we are all well used to it at this stage.

The works at some parts of the town are taking forever. At the bottom of Stephen Street reinstatement works were only completed this week after several months of non stop digging up of the road and the nearby footpath on Markievicz Road.

It was a nightmare for pedestrians. I honestly do feel the works have taken too long. It’s left the city centre in an awful looking mess.

Road signs and pedestrian lights which should have been replaced having been the worst for wear when taken done during the works have simply gone back up and look so unsightly.

Loose gravel and stones are everywhere, especially on footpaths. The city centre needs a complete sweep!

Shoppers and the business community have been so tolerant. By all means do the work but let’s do a proper tidy up when the job is completed.

These contracts are worth millions yet the city centre looks worse than it ever was as they near completion.

There’s been sleepless nights due to the works and everyone has grinned and bared it all in the name of progress but the price for this shouldn’t be an untidy mess left behind for us to all endure.

Every road and street in the city centre needs complete resurfacing and not patchwork quilt type reinstatement works that are evident in lots of places.
