The Sligo Champion

Coola’s new pitch

-

COOLA Rural Development Association (CRDA) and Coola Post-Primary School are running a Strictly Come Dancing event in the Radisson Blu Hotel, Sligo on Easter Sunday night, April 1st.

The event is part of a huge community drive to raise funds to build a synthetic grass multi-sport training pitch on the Coola school grounds. It is envisaged that Coola’s students, along with pupils of nearby national schools, will benefit greatly from the facility.

With pitches increasingly under pressure due to weather and demand, the Coola all-weather pitch is sure to be a busy facility.

On Easter Sunday night, 13 pairs of dancers will strut their stuff in the Radisson Blu Hotel.

Teachers, past and current students, and others who see the huge benefit the all-weather can deliver, will compete for the Coola Strictly title. It promises to be a fun and entertaining night. The 900 ticket-only event is all sold out, with doors opening at 7pm.

Coola Principal, Mr Damien McGoldrick, said of the training pitch: ‘It’s something that will give a great lift to the area, not just our school community. Securing pitches for training has never been as troublesome as clubs and schools all over the county know. This facility will provide certainty for teams in their preparation for competition.

“We also see it as being a great bonus for local youth groups and other sports groups in the area.”

Mr McGoldrick paid tribute to the committee members for their endless efforts, and to the local clubs, businesses, and communities who had weighed in behind it:

He continued: ‘There are many great causes that people contribute to, and we are aware that people can be stretched, but the time and effort that everyone from the dancers to the fundraisers have invested highlights this as a venture that people of the local communities see as worthwhile.

“It’s particularly pleasing to have so many past pupils ‘giving something back’ in terms of support on all levels. There are still a number of fundraisers to take place, from Boston Tea Parties in Geevagh to a Latin night in Des McDonaghs’ in Heapstown on Saturday 24th.
