GSS will meet Bourbon Bar in Cup final

-

2017 Open Cup Champions GSS progressed to the 2018 final on Tuesday last at the expense of Forrest Celtic after defeating them impressively by 2-0.

Going into the game, both sides would have fancied their chances of progressing, after avoiding the difficult side of the semi-final draw.

Both GSS and Forrest Celtic have experienced solid league campaigns, with the two sides sitting third and fourth respectively in the Premier Division.

The game proved as many thought, full of physicality with neither side willing to let each other settle in the early moments of the game.

As the game went on, the cup holders managed to get a foothold in the game and created more chances than Forrest.

Their dominance was eventually rewarded as GSS booked their place in the Open Cup Final for the second consecutive year thanks to goals from the prolific Brendan Lowry and Pauric Congan.

The cup holders will meet their neighbours the Bourbon Bar in the final, after they had a hugely impressive victory over Cornview Celtic by 4-1, a result which came at a surprise to many, as Cornview had only suffered one defeat previous to this game all season.

Never the less, the victory was fully deserved as a brace from John Bellew and Shane Quinn sent the Bourbon into next month’s final, which is set to be a mouth-watering one and has the potential to go either way. In the only league game last week, Calry had an impressive 1-0 victory over the Sally Gardens thanks to a goal from Keith Lynch. This week’s fixtures: Tuesday at 9pm Bourbon Bar vs. GSS; Wednesday at 8pm White Gorillas vs. Inter Inferno; Wednesday at 9pm Forrest Celtic vs. Foleys Bar; Friday at 8pm Cornview Celtic vs. Bald Eagles; Friday at 9pm Strand Celtic vs. Calry.
