LADIES - Competitive club football in the county is gradually getting underway and two club teams have already been in action. Having been unable to field a team for the past two years it was great to see an adult team line out in the first round of the winter leagues recently. The predominantly young side – only six had played at this level previously - were pitted against a strong St. Michaels outfit and acquitted themselves well, being in contention until the closing minutes when the more experienced Ballintogher based side managed to close the game out on a final scoreline of 5-8 to 2-6. And so on to round 3 and the long trip to Grange to take on the home side, St Molaise Gaels. The side got off to the perfect start and had scored 1-6 without reply by the end of the first quarter. A comeback of sorts seemed on the cards for the home side when they struck for two points either side of a goal from the penalty spot but that was as good as it was to get as two goals soon after the re-start put the visitig side in a commanding position and from thereon the only thing in question was the margin of victory. The final scoreline was 5-9 to 1-7. THE U-14’s had a hectic few days in the Féile qualifying competition. After a tightly fought opening encounter against St. Nathy’s the girls emerged victorious by a single point. Next up it was neighbours Eoghan Rua and the girls put in a superb performance to claim victory by a margin of four points and so set up a clash with St. Mary’s in the final. This game, which was played on the Bank Holiday, proved a bridge too far for the side with the Sligo town based girls holding the edge in most sectors and emerging convincing winners in the end. CONGRATS to club player Emer McHugh who was a member of the RCSI team which won the Donaghy Cup recently, a competition for third level colleges football. CONGRATS also to Frances Hanley on her magnificent victory in the Recitation section in the Connacht Finals of Scór Sinsir which were held in Roscommon last week. Hard luck to the other St. Farnan’s representatives in the Solo Singing, Léiriú and Instrumental Music. SYMPATHY is extended to the relatives of the late Michael Healy. Ar dheis Dé go raibh sé.

OUR Skoda-Burns Garage-Sponsored Senior team, got their season off to a good start in Stenson Park last Saturday when they defeated visitors Bunninadden by 3-12 to 1-9 in the Benson Cup. In a game which was typical of early season fare the visitors led by a single point, 1-7 to 1-6, at half time after a lot of scrappy play by both sides. In the second half our lads gradually got on top, thanks in no small measure to some great scores from David Rooney, to run out convincing winners.

TOURLESTRANE

THE season is getting busy now with a few games played this weekend. Our minor lads started few club wins on Friday night with a 4 point win over Owenmore Gaels in a very exciting 60 minutes of football. Next up on Saturday morning were the senior ladies who faced Eastern Harps in the spring sunshine. We came out on top in this encounter with a nice win of 3/7 to 1/4. OUR u16 boys travelled to Oxfield also on Saturday morning but were beaten by a much stronger DRP team. Sunday morning saw our Junior men take to the field to start their season off with a win over Cloonacool . Both teams swapped leads after Cloonacool got off to a winning start in the first 15 minutes but a combination of our fresh younger crew starting off this year and the ‘less younger’ experienced lads Tourlestrane picked some nice points and we took the lead and stayed ahead seeing us taking the win at the final whistle 14 points to 10.

WELL done to Sligo with a nice win over Derry. Also huge congratulations to St Attracta’s Juvenile Team who won the Connacht B title during the week. The club was well represented so well done to the team and management. REMINDER of our Good Friday Family fundraising quiz night taking place again this year with great prizes to be won. Our Easter Camp is filling up fast. It takes place on March 27th-29th/ WE heard with sadness of the passing of Dan Tuohy during the week . Dan was a man of many faces throughout the parish of Tourlestrane and Aclare, as he and his late wife Phil were involved in various community groups over the years and gave unselfishly of their time and talents to all. He was one of the original promoters of the successful St Patrick’s Day Parade in Aclare village but the club will remember him most for Hurling . WITH a strong tradition of Hurling deeply rooted in his veins from his native county Clare he managed the senior Tourlestrane Hurling team alongside the Late Martin Brennan of Rhue and proudly led the lads to win 7 senior Sligo Hurling titles .

THE club wishes to extend sympathy to Maria and Justin, to Fin and Sarena and to Dan’s extended family . We also heard of the sad passing of Paddy Durcan Gorterslin Aclare, and the club extends sympathy to his wife Joan and his family .
