‘We need to protect the lives of the unborn in the future’
Dear Editor,
THE rapidity with which Simon Coveney changed his mind on abortion shows just how quickly principle bows before pragmatism in politics.
As is also witnessed by the “conversions” of the likes of Regina Doherty, Simon Harris, and even Leo himself.
But at least their rapid ‘evolution’ shows just how little credence can be given to any assurance a politician might make about limiting the scope of future abortion laws.
Simon Coveney’s plea for a two thirds majority to pass legislation on abortion is not just unconstitutional, but also a reflection of how weak he himself considers his newly adopted position.
If the 8th amendment is not retained we’re effectively giving the Oireachtas a blank cheque when it comes to legislating for abortion. I wonder how many more dissenters will be told to get with the government’s abortion programme.
The case for protecting the 8th and the lives of countless preborn persons into the future could not have been more starkly highlighted. Yours faithfully,
