Dean Clancy wins sixth National boxing title as he prepares for Euros

-

THE national success of a local boxer continued at the weekend when he added another major title to his collection.

Dean Clancy who trains out of Ballinacarrow boxing club and is coached by his dad Jason won his 6th Irish title on Saturday evening.

It is a huge achievement for the teenage boxing star who is preparing for the upcoming Europeans which are starting soon.

Jason said everyone was very proud. He added: “This is a massive achievement as he’s only 16 years old.

“On route to his win he bet Eoin Neeson from Ulster in the quarters, Paul Loonam Leinster and in the final he bet Danny Duffy from Strabane.

“He is one of the best boxers to come out of Sligo in a long time and he is only starting out.

“He won silver at the European junior championships last September in Bulgaria. Where most people after wining an Irish title would go away and celebrate, Dean left straight after his win and headed to Edenderry to join up with the rest of Team Ireland as they are in training for the upcoming Youth European Championships. These are taking place in Italy in two weeks and this shows the dedication he has.

“This is Dean’s second European championships in 6 months which again is some achievement,” Jason added. He thanked EJs meanswear for sponsoring him in the Europeans in Italy in two weeks’ time.
