Grant of €350k announced for historic Carrowmore site
FUNDING has been announced of €350,000 for the Carrowmore Megalithic site which will help towards development of a new State-of-the-Art visitor experience at the location.
The announcement was made by Deputy Tony McLoughlin.
The funding forms part of Fáilte Ireland’s strategic partnership with the OPW and this funding will come from their Capital Grants Budget in 2018.
“It is hoped that this new funding will enable the location to develop and to attract even greater visitors into the future and that it will develop into an unique archaeological hub.
“In September last year, I lobbied the Minister about the current levels of facilities in Carrowmore, and about the need for the site to receive greater investment from government.
“This is one of Sligo’s most visited tourism sights and often, people can’t even purchase a cup of tea at the location.
“It was badly in need of investment and I am delighted to see that the Government have listened and that they have decided to invest in this great facility.
“The development of key tourism infrastructure in Sligo, Leitrim and South Donegal was one of my five key election priorities in 2016.
“It clear that many sites and tourism projects like ‘Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery’ needed greater Government investment and funding in order to be able to cater for greater tourism numbers in the future and to provide a better visitor experience.
“I am still fighting very hard on this priority and I look forward to being able to announce even more funding for tourism projects here, similar to this €350,000, the €850,000 allocation for the Coolaney Mountain Bike Centre and the €500,000 for the Drumshanbo - Carrick on Shannon Blueway.
“I look forward to seeing this development at Carrowmore take place over the coming months and for even greater numbers of tourists to visit Sligo,” said Deputy McLoughlin.
