Was saving for insurance

A 36-year-old father was saving for insurance which had lapsed at the time he was stopped, Sligo District Court heard.

Andrew Tiernan with an address at Cranmore Drive, Cranmore, Sligo was charged with no insurance at Market Street, Sligo on October 8th 2017. Ms Laura Spellman solicitor (defending) said that her client took the foolish decision to drive into town to collect food for his wife and children on a wet, windy night. She said his insurance had lapsed and he was saving for his premium at the time which was in excess of €900. He had taken out insurance on October 20 th 2017 she added and asked Judge Deirdre Gearty under the circumstan­ces not to disqualify him as his partner doesn’t drive and he brings his children to school. She said he also drives his mother to medical appointmen­ts. The judge said under the circumstan­ces as the family require him to drive she wouldn’t disqualify and fined him €250.
