Life-long humanist in Sligo talk about Darwin and his theories
North West Humanists welcome David McConnell to Sligo on Tuesday 10th April at Radisson Blu Hotel at 8pm where he will give a presentation on the theme ‘Darwin’s dangerous idea and humanism today.’ All Welcome.
David McConnell was educated at the non-denominational Sandford Park School in Dublin.
He studied genetics at Trinity College (1962-66), and biochemistry at the California Institute of Technology (1966-1970). He spent 1975-76 analysing DNA sequences at Harvard.
He was Professor of Genetics at Trinity (19902014) and is now Fellow Emeritus in Genetics and Pro-Chancellor of Dublin University.
He is a member of the Royal Irish Academy and of the European Molecular Biology Organisation.
He was Chair of the Adelaide Hospital Society, which among other things, protected the privacy of the doctor-patient relationship.
He was Chair of the not-for-profit Irish Times Trust, which owns the Irish Times, promoting the role of a free and independent press in Ireland.
He is a life-long humanist who was honoured to be appointed as the Honorary President of the Humanist Association in 2009, succeeding another past pupil of Sandford Park, Justin Keating.
