BUNNINADDEN CALRY/ST JOSEPH’S 1-8 2-16

A heavy shower of rain just before throw-in left conditions very greasy for this fixture in Bunninadden last Saturday evening. However it was the home side who raced into a four point lead with a goal and a point in the first four minutes, through Barry Cafferky and Vinny Frizzell. The visitors didn’t panic and were back within one point following 2 points from Eoin Doherty (1free), and a superb score from Connor Griffin following great build-up play from the midfield. Poor defensive play by Calry let Barry Cafferky in for a soft free which he followed up with another point stretching the home lead to 3 points again. That proved to be Bunninadden’s last score of the first half however as Calry took control of midfield through Vinny Nally and Damien O’Boyle. Points from Darragh Cummins (3), Connor Griffin, and 2 from Eoin Doherty (1free) brought Calry right back into the game and leading by 3 at the break.

Bunninadden started the second half brighter with the first attack but unfortunately it went wide. Brian Cox of Calry/St Joseph’s was giving the home team an horrid time with his surging runs from defence and his delivery to the forward line was excellent. One such delivery set up a goal chance for Eamonn MacHale but he opted to take his point instead and followed it up straight away with another point. Barry Cafferky did his best to keep the hosts in touch and put over a fine score to reduce the deficit. Michael Flynn was replaced by Bryan McGovern for a “Black card” offence and McGovern got stuck in straight away. Conor Murray pointed for the home side and things seemed to be picking up for the locals when Daniel Cafferky was through on goal only to be pulled down by Brian Shannon. With a penalty to come and a “Black card” issued to Shannon, the balance was shifting to the home side again. However Sligo’s Aidan Devanney got down low to his left to save the spot kick. That stopped whatever resurgence Bunninadden might have been hoping for and when McLoughlin was red carded for the home side, the writing was on the wall. Daniel Caffercaigh pointed a free but an excellent move direct from the kickout involving most of the Calry team, eventually led to Eoin Doherty crossing the ball for Aaron Flynn to tap into an empty net.

Calry’s long ball into Griffin was working even though he was being doubled marked, with the inside forwards working tirelessly off the big man to pick off the scores. A pointed ’45 was to be Bunninadden’s final score and following a sublime interception by Adrian Cummins who fed Mark Fowley. Fowley in turn fed Paddy Woulfe who along with substitute James McDonagh tore the defence to shreds with a lungbusting run to free up Eoin Doherty who finished calmly to the net for the final kick of the game and send their large travelling support home happy.
