The Sligo Champion

Cornview Celtic crowned Premier Division champions

-

CORNVIEW Celtic were crowned Premier Division champions on Friday last, after overseeing the challenge of the Bald Eagles in their final league game in the Sligo Rovers Astro League.

Cornview had enjoyed an incredible run of form since rejoining the league back in September of 2017, suffering just two defeats all season.

Under the guidance of Darren Kearins and Eammon Mc Donagh, the Cornview men remained strong and resolute all season, fulfilling all of their league fixtures while sitting in top spot for most of the campaign.

On paper they looked the team to beat all year and so it proved.

Averaging more than three goals per game since the Christmas break, they were always going to be an incredible force to face up against, especially with the league’s top goal scorer Gareth Kelly leading the attack with 14 goals in 2018 alone.

Their quest for the double still remains intact, with quarter finals coming up in the Emmett O’Connor Memorial Cup in the coming weeks.

This week, attention turns to the Championship division, with two teams still in the running for the Championship title.

Inter Inferno currently sit in top spot having played all of their league games and are six points clear.

Second place Sally Gardens play their final two league games this week, needing two wins and a win ratio of nine goals to secure the crown.

It’s set to be yet another cracking week of thrills and spills in popular astro league, as yet another season is coming to an end.

Next week will see the Emmett O’Connor memorial cup taking place, which is the final competition of the season with 12 teams battling it out to collect the last trophy of the year, with the final taking place on May 11th.

This week’s fixtures are as follows:

Tuesday 10th @ 9pm GSS vs. Foleys Bar

Wednesday 11th @9pm Sally Gardens vs. Ballymote

Friday 13th @9pm Sally Gardens vs. Strand Celtic
