A 27-year-old driver who was drunk and crashed into another car on the Inner Relief Road left the scene, Sligo District Court heard. Ilmars Kalvans of Cartron Bay pleaded guilty to drink driving and not having insurance on March 3rd 2017. The accident happened close to the junction with Markievicz Road. He was driving a BMW which rear ended another car in front and there was extensive damage. He attempted to drive away but the other female driver managed to take the keys from the ignition. The defendant came back to the scene minutes after gardaí arrived where he was subsequent­ly arrested. His blood alcohol reading was 260ml/100. He had a number of previous road traffic offences including the unauthoris­ed taking of a m.p.v. Ms Laura Spellman solicitor (defending) said he was a Latvian living in Ireland working as an oyster picker and no longer drinking. The judge adjourned the case until December and said he is facing a lengthy disqualifi­cation and suspended sentence.
