Sally Gardens are Astro League Champions
THE Sally Gardens were crowned champions in the Sligo Rovers Astro League, after claiming the title in dramatic style on goal difference.
Before last week’s fixtures, the Sally Gardens needed two victories in their final two league games while also needing to improve their goal difference by nine.
Their first hurdle was on Wednesday last, as they faced a Ballymote side who were without a league game in three weeks.
The Sally Gardens were rampant on the night, securing a massive 7-1 victory,
This of course improved their goal difference by six. This proved to be a massive swing in the title chase, with the Ballisodare men now needing just a three goal victory over Strand Celtic on Friday last. Unfortunately due to commitments off the pitch, Strand Celtic were unable to field on Friday last and thus the Sally Gardens received a walkover which resulted in an automatic 3-0 victory. This was not an ideal way to be crowned champions, but never the less the best team always comes out on top.
Attention now turns to the final competition of the year, being the Emmett O’ Connor Memorial Cup for 2018. The first round of the cup takes place this week and the fixtures are as follows:
