Tributes to much loved former Council staff member

-

TRIBUTES have been paid to a former long serving member of the staff of Sligo County Council who passed away suddenly last week.

Angela Savage, formerly of Stonehall, Ballisodare, died suddenly last Wednesday in Malta which had become a second home for her since her retirement from the council in 2013.

She is survived by her parents, Martin and Mary Kate, sisters Martina (McGlinchey) Grainne (Quigley), brother Peter and partner Fredrick.

Funeral Mass was today (Tuesday) at 11 o’clock, followed by burial in Ballisodare New Cemetery.

A minute’s silence was held in her memory on Friday afternoon in Ballisodare prior to the ceremony renaming the bridge there by President Michael D Higgins.

“This is a very special occasion for the Savage family and which is tinged with the news we got just two days ago of the passing of Angela in Malta,” he said.

“I think at the same time in spirit I’m sure she would join with us all in honouring, as the people of Ballisodare are, the memory of Lieutenant Martin Savage, who 100 years ago died in the service of the Republic during our War of Independence,” the President told the assembled crowds.

A minute’s applause was also held at The Showgrounds on Saturday night before the match between Sligo Rovers and St Patrick’s Athletic. Angela had been a past secretary of the club.

A statement from the council said that over the next 32 years she became a great friend to so many people who have been shocked at her sudden passing.

“She worked in a number of sections, bringing her strong work ethic and outstanding organisational ability to each: General Purposes, Housing Section, Fire Service, and more recently as the County Manager’s Secretary, where her discretion loyalty and professionalism were valued qualities.

“Angela had a warmth and decency about her, a kind nature and genuine concern that made her a trusted and loyal friend.

“She had many interests and hobbies, working discreetly as a volunteer for many local causes.

“More publicly, she served as Secretary for Sligo Rovers, and her efficiency and dedication in that post were acknowledged by the club’s supporters and players in a tribute before last weekend’s game v St Patrick’s Athletic.

“Since her untimely passing, colleagues among staff and councillors have been sharing stories of her many acts of kindness.

“She will always be remembered with great fondness and affection and will be sorely missed,” the statement concluded.
