Man who didn’t pay for meal was ‘destitute’

A 31 year old man who made off without paying for a meal at a restaurant was destitute at the time his solicitor told Sligo District Court.Brendan Glynn of Maryville admitted the offence which was committed at Panda restaurant, Wine Street Car Park on June 26 th 2017. He also admitted stealing Heineken worth €24 from Tesco on the same date. He has 44 previous conviction­s.

Mr Gerard McGovern, solicitor (defending) said Glynn was currently in custody on other charges awaiting trial since last October. Bail had been refused and the matter was due back before that court on May 29 th.

He said Glynn has had difficulti­es with alcohol and other substances and the offences were committed when he was down and out and destitute. He has been drug free however since last October. “The glazed look has gone from his face,” he said. Judge Kevin Kilrane imposed a one month jail term.
