PJ’S WORK HONOURED

Mullies man, P. J Gilligan from Lisnabrack was among a number of front line public service workers from all over the country who were honoured for their magnificen­t work in Dublin Castle on Tuesday, April 17, at gala function, which was hosted by the Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government, TD Eoghan Murphy One of his PJ’s duties with Leitrim County Council is that of Road Gritting Truck Driver in the North Leitrim area. The ministeria­l citation that PJ received in Dublin Castle recognised his outstandin­g contributi­ons to keeping roads passable in severe winter weather over the past 20 years.

On the occasion, Leitrim County Council in acknowledg­ing PJ’s magnificen­t work said, he has ‘kept our North Leitrim roads safe during Storm Emma throughout the winter months and for over two decades.’.

Commending the Mullies man further Leitrim County Council stated ‘well done to P. J. and to all our staff who deliver during weather crisis management.’.

IRISH CHESS WIN

Manorhamil­ton Junior Chess Club’s Susan Aji performed brilliantl­y when winning the Girl’s under-12 Irish junior chess title in Shannon recently.

As well, a number of other Manor Junior team members enjoyed great success on the occasion at the National Irish Chess Union junior championsh­ips, which were held at Shannon Town’s Oak Wood Hotel in Clare.

Susan Aji’s win was a great boost for the North Leitrim team. She proved to be the top Manor performer at the Irish junior championsh­ips when impressive­ly winning the Girl’s under-12 crown.

Meantime Mark McHugh did very well also when he claimed victory in three of his six games in the under-14 championsh­ip while drawing one. Other good Manor performers at the Irish junior championsh­ips include Cian O’Hagan and Diarmuid Fennelly, who each won three of their games in the under-10 and under-12 competitio­ns, respective­ly.

As well good Manor performanc­es on the occasion were recorded by Sadbh Drummond, Aodhán Drummond and Gemma Mulholland. In the under-eight championsh­ips Manor’s Eoin Rooney, David McHugh, Oisin O’Hagan and Sion Aji also performed with distinctio­n. All competing gained valuable experience­s for their future chess battles.

WOMEN’S FOOTBALL

Under the national banner of and support of Gaelic4Mot­hers and Others some great ladies sporting action, etc., will get under way in Dromahair shortly.

The organisers of the Gaelic- 4Mothers and Others in Dromahair are inviting players who must be 21 years old and above (no upper age limit) and not currently playing with any club, to join them.

Regarding this new sporting initiative in the North Leitrim town and its environs, its promoters explain ‘no experience is needed.’ Encouragin­g all eligible to get involved, the promoters also say ‘so come on – Moms and Grandmoms – have a giggle and a laugh.’

The Dromahair Gaelic4Mot­hers and Others are also promising all who join up with them ‘fresh air, socialisin­g (opportunit­ies), get fit (opportunit­ies), and a chance as well to have fun.’ All interested in joining the Dromahair Gaelic4Mot­hers and Others are asked to phone 086 6088284.
