Strand bar seeks modern facelift

- By SORCHA CROWLEY

The Strand Bar and Restaurant in Strandhill has lodged fresh plans to modernise its front facade.

Patsy, John, Johnston and Neil Byrne are hoping it will be second time lucky with Sligo County Council planners after they were refused permission for a similar proposal last August.

This time round, the Byrne brothers have opted for a smaller first floor balcony and contemporary style and decor.

They’re proposing to demolish the existing front porch of the bar and restaurant and build a “more modern and more appealing” extension in its place. The family says they’re making the application “in order to place an increased focus on the restaurant portion of the business.”

As a result, they’re proposing to create an extension with an open plan seated area which will act as a waiting area for the first floor restaurant area. They say the proposed extension will provide a contemporary style and decor more in line with modern restaurant styles and contemporary facade. The proposed new front porch will be larger than the existing porch they hope to knock down and has been designed by architect Colin Bell.

The applicants say the proposed extension is “essential to its continued success.”

“It is imperative to have this additional front foyer and facelift,” they added. County planners are due to decide by 3rd of June next.
