Writer Kevin Barry draws a big crowd for library event

AWARD winning writer Kevin Barry who is based in Ballinafad, Sligo took part in The Word at Sligo County Library last week.

The evening saw a capacity crowd packed in to hear Kevin Barry and Julianna Holland (pictured right) read from their work. Sligo based Kevin Barry is the award winning author of novels City of Bohane and Beatlebone. He has published two short story collection­s Dark Lies the Island and There are Little Kingdoms. He co-edits Winter

Papers, an annual anthology for the arts. Previous awards include The Sunday Times Short Story Award, Internatio­nal Dublin Literary Award and the Goldsmiths Prize.

Julianna Holland is currently a student of the BA in Writing and Literature at IT Sligo and is a member of The Sandy Field Writers’ Group. A Sligo native, she studied Film and Psychother­apy in Dublin and Galway. Julianna has previously been shortliste­d by Fish Publishing, The Bridport Prize, placed third in The Bath Flash Fiction Award and was a finalist in Best Small Fiction 2017. The Word is a monthly author reading and open mic, a collaborat­ion between the Library and students of the BA (Hons) in Writing and Literature IT Sligo. The Word next takes place on Wednesday 31st May at 6.30pm in the library.
