The Sligo Champion

John is Hon Life Patron for his hard work

-

HE was instrumental in setting up the Community Games organisation in Sligo and his many roles within the county and at National level have made him one of the most popular figures in the organisation.

How fitting then that John McGetrick was elected as Hon Life Patron of the Community Games at its recent AGM in the University of Limerick.

John has served at all levels throughout his life and has held a number of roles within the county and also on the National committee.

His knowledge of the organisation is without doubt exceptional and when advice is needed John is the man to go to.

He is President of the County Sligo Community Games and is a leading member of the Activities Committee within the county too.

John, who speaks modestly about his work, said it was a privilege to become Hon Life Patron of the Community Games.

He said: “It is nice to get it. I have been there now 48 years.

“I was Games Director in 1975 some people keep the job for 2 years while other people keep it for 20 years.”

Community Games has been a huge part of John’s life down through the years. “The Community Games

has

been a big part of my life and most of my volunteering efforts have gone into Community Games.

“I’ve met a lot of people over the years and sadly some of the early people are no longer with us.”

John was hugely integral to the establishment of the Sligo Community Games.

“The first year was 1971. Gerry Burke was among those involved then and has since passed on.”

John said the Community Games has been such a huge part of local life throughout Ireland.

“It really has done a lot for young people around Ireland and we have had some great winners over the years in Sligo too.

“I’ve been involved at National level all the time and this year should be good as we have a new venue in Limerick.

“People are excited because it will be a huge improvement on last year.”

He said he’s really looking forward to working alongside Tanya Kelly from Riverstown with takes over as Activities Director. “I am delighted for Tanya. I’ve been pushing it for the last 2 years. She is a very capable lady it’s great for Sligo to see her there,” John added.

The committee of the Sligo Community Games said there is nobody more deserving of the honour that has been bestowed on John and that everyone in Sligo wish him the very best in his continued involvement in the organisation.
