Local teams excel at Aldi Community Games
SLIGO was well represented at the Connaught Community Games Finals in Carrick-on-Shannon on Saturday 21st April.
Twenty one teams in total participated in the various events over the one day event, which was hosted by County Leitrim and was a tremendous success.
All Sligo teams did the county proud and some were narrowly beaten in semi-finals and finals.
The children should be proud of their achievements and understand that only one team can come out on top on the day, but they are all winners in their own right.
Sligo have 7 teams participating at the first of the All-Ireland Finals in University of Limerick on 26th & 27th May.
The 7 teams are: U/12 Draughts Coolaney; U/14 Draughts Coolaney; U/13 Boys Indoor Soccer Riverstown; U/11 Mini Rugby Rosses Point; U/13 Boys Table Tennis Rosses Point; U/13 Girls Table Tennis Bunninadden and U/16 Boys Table Tennis Bunninadden.
This is an excellent result and we are joined with Galway in hav- ing the highest representation from Connaught at the finals.
A first for Community Games were the two teams of Syrian children from Ballaghaderreen in Table Tennis.
It is a testament of the way that the people of Ballaghaderreen have welcomed those children and have allowed them integrate into the community. Declan Regan, County Secretary in Roscommon and a native of Ballaghaderreen has spent endless hours within the community and sought Table Tennis tables so that the children could practice. Both teams got silver medals and were given a huge welcome and applause on presentation of their medals on Saturday. All of the Sligo representatives are wished the best of luck at the National Finals and hopefully they will have a very enjoyable weekend in what is a new venue for the finals.
