Mark the May bank holiday weekend by going along to the first Sligo Races meeting of the year. The theme of this event on Sunday is Peaky Blinders so get out the flat caps. This is always one of the busiest events of the year. More details available on countyslig­oraces.com.

Where We Are Now, is a theatre festival celebratin­g works written by and about those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgende­r, questionin­g and everything in between! My Old Hometown Gurteen is a new country music festival coming to the town on May bank holiday weekend with stars such as Patrick Feeney performing. The festival takes place this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are available in local outlets.

Nathan Carter is making a return to the North West for the May Bank Holiday on Sunday the 6th May at the Diamond Coast Hotel. Doors open at 7pm witht he show starting at 8pm. Tickets €30.

On Friday the 4th of May, Irish classical guitarist and composer, Pat Coldrick will perform at the Hawk’s Well Theatre. Pat Coldrick’s session work and classical appearance­s have earned him a reputation of being one of the finest and most versatile guitarists in Ireland. Tickets to this event are €18/15conc. with a special €9 rate for those under 18 (+€1 renovation fee towards the Hawk’s Well Renovation Fund).

The 2017 champions DDSL return to Sligo this weekend to try retain their title for the second year of the Sligo Super Cup. The elite Under 12 competitio­n sees eight academies from the UK and Ireland face off. Weekend pass for the event at The Showground­s costs €10. Games take place from Friday until Sunday.

Much loved historians Terry Reilly and John McTernan have published numerous books detailing the histories of Mayo & Sligo. On this special occasion at the Hawk’s Well on Saturday May 5th, they come together to chat about the more unusual and remarkable stories from their decades of research. Hear about the audacious duelling Fenton’s of Easkey, U boats in Killala Bay,the Ursuline student who became Royal advisor to Emperor Akihito of Japan and more!
