Dana speaks at antiabortion meeting

SLIGO colours were in abundance in a scorching Ruislip on Sunday for the Yeats men opening round of the Connacht Championship with hosts London.

With thoughts of the disappointing defeat five years previous it was on players and fans minds alike how important it was to leave London with a win and progress to meet the winners of Galway and Mayo.

With so many Sligo followers living in the capital it was of little surprise that the black and white army was out in force with jerseys being donned proudly.

London too of course brought a large crowd and there was Sligo interest there too, the most remarkable being David Carrabine who started at corner back for London and is older brother to Sean, who came on for Sligo in the second half, two brothers lining out on opposing teams not something you come across all that regularly in GAA.

Geevagh’s Shane McManus and Calry/St Joseph’s Cormac Coyne were also part of the London set-up while captain Liam Gavaghan’s dad hails from Tourlestrane.

With temperatures hitting 25 degrees it was perfect conditions to watch football for spectators, the players however might disagree with such challenging heat.

From early afternoon crowds were spilling out of South Ruislip tubestation, sunglasses on and flags in hand as McGovern Park Ruislip beckoned.

Spirits were high as friends and neighbours chatted about their predictions for the game. With a new stadium recently built Ruislip was sparkling in the sunshine and the game went very much in Sligo’s favour this time.

A memorable day for both sets of spectators as Sligo now march on to the next round. FORMER MEP Dana Rosemary Scallon and Tyrone GAA manager Mickey Harte will be among several speakers to address a public meeting against abortion in Sligo this week.

The meeting is being organised by the European Life Network, Human Life International and The Catholic Voice newspaper.

Sligo Park Hotel is the venue on Thursday, May 10 th, and the meeting is due to commence at 7.30pm.

A video will also be shown which was made in support of the retention of the Eighth Amendment in the Constitution.

Further information on the public meeting is available from Patrick Buckley at 087 2578 250.
