-

A 19-year-old driver who passed a car on the inside at speed on the main Sligo to Donegal road near Grange didn’t have insurance, Sligo District Court was told.

Before the court was Senan Tighe of 253 Sunset Drive, Cartron who was summoned for dangerous driving and not having insurance at Cashelgarron on September 26 th last.

Inspector Paul Kilcoyne said a driver, Eugene McHale who is a retired Garda was driving from Sligo to Grange when he was overtaken on his inside by a car driving at speed along the hard shoulder.

The defendant subsequently pulled in at a filling station in Grange and the Gardaí arrived soon after. Mr McHale said he never saw the other car come up behind him.

Mr Tom MacSharry, solicitor (defending) pleaded that the defendant had started a new relationship with a Michelle Scanlon who owned the car and he had told her he was fully insured. “Whether he was trying to show off I don’t know. He realises it could have been very serious,” pleaded Mr MacSharry. He added that the defendant did not have any previous convictions and was due to start a sports and recreation course. Judge Kevin Kilrane (left) fined the defendant a total of €300 and banned him from driving for two years.
