Differing views on the forthcoming Eighth referendum

-

Dear Editor,

Having read the many articles and listened to the debates from both sides about the 8th Amendment, I can understand and sympathize with anyone in a dilemma where Foetal Abnormality Incest or Rape requires a solution.

This should be addressed immediately by those in a position of power to implement a structure within our society that would allow those affected to have the support and assistance to find solutions in a dignified and professional manner here in their own country.

How can open availability of abortion not result in the killing of innocent children. The posters “our bodies our choices “is fine and well for some. How can a young girl or someone perhaps in a difficult home environment , tell her parents I’m pregnant and I’m going to have an abortion.

This will rarely happen and result in that person having a procedure to remove the problem.

This can in later years lead to many physical and mental health issues. Why can there not be an amendment to the current legislation that would address the issues as stated in a compassionate and professional manner instead of burying the problem.

I am voting No to protect those who don’t have a voice so that one day they will.

Regards

Noel M Kennedy 29 Ard Na Veigh Sligo. Dear Editor,

The phrases used by pro-life campaigners of “abortion on demand” or “abortion without reason”, are misogynistic, demonising and scare-mongering.

These phrases trivialise the problems faced by women who experience crisis pregnancies, unviable pregnancies, and tragedies such as rape or incest. “Abortion on demand” is emotionally charged language that is utilised to shame and stigmatise women who procure abortions, and to portray a deeply sensitive and personal decision as undue, unjustified and gratuitous.

All healthcare and medical procedures are sought out as required and as needed, and this should be no different in the case of abortion.

There is no such thing as “abortion without reason”, as every woman who procures an abortion has her own, often strongly personal, reasons.

If one agrees and acknowledges a woman’s right to choose what is right for her and her circumstances, then the bar cannot be moved based on whose reasons one does and does not respect.

The 8th Amendment stigmatises, shames, harms and punishes women in difficult and unfortunate situations and prevents doctors and medical professionals from acting in the best interest of their patients.
