SHOCK AT PILOT’S DEATH
Michael McCarrick flew over native Doomore before fatal crash
THE community of Doomore, outside Tubbercurry was said to be in shock after the death of local man Michael McCarrick in a plane crash last Friday.
The father-of-two died when his two-seater plane came down in a field in Breaffy, near Bonniconlon shortly after 6.30pm that evening.
Poignantly, Michael, (pictured right) who lived in Ballina for the last number of years, had just taken a pleasure trip down to his native townland near Cloonacool and was returning to Lough Conn Flying Club airfield at Cloghans, Ballina when tragedy struck.
The ESB networks technician was killed instantly. His remains were taken to Castlebar General Hospital for a post-mortem examination while the wreckage from the plane was taken to a hangar in Gormanstown, Co Meath, for examination by technicians from the Air Accident Investigation Unit (AAIU) who also visited the scene of the impact.
Tubbercurry County Councillor Jerry Lundy told The Sligo Champion Michael was “a lovely guy.” See page 13 for more.
