‘No’ campaigners are lashed for the ‘defacing’ of iconic Ben Bulben
There was a massive backlash against the No campaign in Sligo after a large sign was erected on the side of iconic Ben Bulben.
A 100 metre large NO sign was put up on the north side of Ben Bulben in the early hours of last Thursday morning. It was taken down overnight. Tommy Banks of the Sligo For Life campaigning for a No vote in the referendum said “It was a cry from the mountain to save Ireland’s babies” and that no one had shouted stop to Hitler.
He said the erection of the white coloured cladding sign was a desperate plea to the voters of the country.
Mr Banks said a group of around 20 people began putting up the sign around 4am and would remain in place until after voting day. Sligo County Council received a number of complaints about the sign and began an planning investigation.
Strong criticism of the sign was made on social media with many complaining Sligo’s iconic mountain had been defaced.
People accused those of erecting it of engaging in vandalism.
The National Parks and Wildlife Service had also requested those responsible to take the sign down.
