Seed bombing at local creche
CHILDREN as young as three are learning about the importance of biodiversity at Happy Days creche in Carney last week.
As one of the winning groups in the ‘Sligo Communities and Biodiversity Project’ Carney Tidy Towns got the creche at the Oxfield Development Centre involved.
The children planted plant, bee and bird friendly plants in wooden flower beds close to their base at Oxfield. They regularly get to check on the progress of their seeds and even get a chance to ‘seed bomb’ the flower beds.
As local ecologist Melinda Swann explains: “We are trying to promote biodiversity through the young children getting them involved in planting pollinator friendly plants, getting them informed that insects are declining and that they need places to feed and live.
“The children here at Happy Days Creche have adopted these flower beds and have made seed bombs which are basically clay balls to throw at the beds. Of course this adds an extra element of fun to the proceedings!”
The local scouts have also been involved in the planting pollinator friendly shrubs for Carney village and its surrounds, along the new walkway from Carney to Oxfield.
Their collective efforts are helping to promote Ireland’s National Pollinator Plan. Melinda says: “It is very encouraging to see how people are becoming more aware of their habitats.”
