Cornview Celtic win Emmett O’Connor Cup
THE 2017/18 Sligo Rovers Astro League came to a close last week, with the Emmett O’Connor Memorial Cup final taking centre stage in the final game of the season, in what proved to be a memorable and exciting year. Cornview Celtic overcame the challenge of Foley’s Bar in the final, securing the Emmett O’Connor Memorial Cup on a score line of 5-1. It wrapped up a fabulous season for Cornview, who achieved the double by also winning the Premier Division title, loosing just two games since last September. Under the guidance of Eamonn McDonagh and Darren Kearns, Cornview proved not only to be physical but also had talent in abundance going forward with Gareth Kelly leading the strike force. There were four competitions in total for the 2017/18 season, being the Premier Division, Championship Division, the Open Cup and finally the Emmett O’Connor Memorial Cup. The following were the accolades for the season: Premier Division Champions: Cornview Celtic. Premier Division Runners Up: Foleys Bar. Championship Champions: Sally Gardens. Championship Runners Up: Inter Inferno. Open Cup Champions: Bourbon Bar. Open Cup Runners Up: GSS. Emmett O’Connor Cup Champions: Cornview Celtic. Emmett O’Connor Cup Runners Up: Foleys Bar. Sligo Rovers would like to thank each team, manager, sponsor and player who participated in the 2017/18 season and made it as successful as it was. The league continues to grow in popularity each year, with 12 teams taking part and players travelling as far as 50 miles in order to take part. Registration for the 2018/19 season will open in August, with further details being announced in due course.
