The South Sligo town of Tubbercurry and surrounding locations have been turned into films sets for the upcoming OsKaRs. With auditions, rehearsals, sourcing costumes, props, locations, hairs, make up and extras all thrown into the mix. A boxing ring, singing practice, a trial and a baby, you’ll never know what you might have seen in Tubbercurry over the last few months. The outcome, seven iconic scenes from major movies with over 60+ local actors taking part.
Films ranging from Rocky to Sister Act, Misery, A Few Good Men, Fr Fed to the Snapper and the Field. The filming complete, now is your chance to get tickets for Tubbercurry GAAs ‘A night at the OsKaRs’ a red-carpet night full of glitz and glamour on Saturday, May 26, in the Sligo Park Hotel. Tickets are €25 and available from committee members and casts. A judging panel will adjudicate on each movie with prizes for Best Film, Best Actor/ Actress, Best Supporting Actor/ Actress on the night.
The OsKaRs is a major fundraising drive for the development of Kilcoyne Park, home of Tubbercurry GAA Tubbercurry GAA was established in 1888 with Kilcoyne Park officially opening in 1964. Since then it has been graced by Sligo’s and Connacht’s finest GAA stars.
With club teams ranging from under-six to senior, the grounds have felt the toll over the years and the board feel now is the right time to give it a major face-lift. In 2017 the members applied for sports funding and to everyone’s delight secured it. Unfortunately, this was not going to be enough to finance the major improvements that are needed so the idea of ‘A Night at the OsKaRs’ was born.
This has been very successful for clubs throughout the country and Tubbercurry GAA Club is very thankful for the support the wider community have provided for this fundraiser. They are delighted the grounds are used by various organisations in Tubbercurry and wish Kilcoyne Park to serve the GAA and wider South Sligo community into the future.

BOIL WATER NOTICE
Representatives from Irish Water held a meeting recently with all the public representatives from Sligo County Council and also with a number of Community Representatives.
They gave an in-depth description of the ongoing problems associated with the water supply from Lough Talt. In a nutshell the boil water notice is set to continue into the immediate future with no sign yet of it being lifted. Many representatives were totally unaware of how basic the treatment plant at Lough Talt actually is, and indeed it is probably incorrect to use the name ‘treatment plant’ at all.
The water coming from the lake goes through a basic system where the water is chlorinated, but it is not put through any filtering system as is the norm in other more modern facilities.
Evidence of Cryptosporidium continues in the water as this is the danger season for this contamination and the public should check the Irish Water website on a regular basis for further updates.
However, households should definitely continue to boil water and leave to cool before drinking.
