Ireland’s self-styled ‘biggest lama’ Kevin McAleer brings his own strange brand of mindfulness to the Hawk’s Well Theatre in Sligo on May 26th. The Tyrone comedian’s latest stage persona takes the form of a highly enlightened guru, who travels around the world giving talks, advanced self-awareness courses, and TV chat show appearances to promote his extensive range of self-help bestsellers.

A screening of Sully takes place at the Glens Centre, Manorhamilton today (Tuesday) at 11am as part of the Bealtaine Festival. Sully is based on the US Airways Flight 1549 that made a forced water landing in New York City’s icy cold Hudson Riverin 2009. The poise and skill of Captain Chesley Sully Sullenberger ensured the safety of all 155 passengers and crew. Shortly after, investigators used computer simulations to charge Sullenberger and his co-pilot with having put the passengers and the plane needlessly at risk.

On Thursday the 24th of May, one of Ireland’s leading contemporary dance companies performs at the Hawk’s Well Theatre. A very timely show, Liz Roche Company’s Wrongheaded merges film, voice and movement to confront the stark realities of women’s rights and freedom of choice in Ireland today. Tickets to Wrongheaded are €15 + €1 fee towards the Hawk’s Well renovation fund. Tickets can be booked online or at the theatre box office at 071-91/61518.

Cherry Dowling and Claire Davenport host a joint show at The Hyde Bridge Gallery. Despite the similarity of thought, their processes as well as choice of material vary greatly. This juxtaposition and communication between their respective bodies of work adds a layer of meaning to the work that is greater than the sum of its parts.
Democratic Schools is a film for those who are not already experts in the politics of education. It is a film that tries to show, as factually and objectively as possible, what unites these schools that assemble once a year under the visionary banner of democracy. The film will be shown at The Model on Saturday, May 26th from 11am.
