A DOLL’S HOUSE

UK theatre company, Theatrical Niche bring their production, A Doll’s House to the Hawk’s Well Theatre on Wednesday the 30 th of May.

Based on the classic tale by Norwegian playwright, Henrik Ibsen, this production is a modern take on a classic piece of theatre that follows the relationship of iconic power couple, Mr & Mrs Helmer. This duo excel at work, staying on top, and socialising.

But as Mr Helmer’s autobiography rolls out around Christmas-time, it seems there are a few things that he may not have mentioned in the foreword.

Exploring stigmas around gender expectations and mental health, this artful adaptation focuses on the impossible idolisation of one ‘perfect’ woman, by a man who walks with weights around his ankles.

Incorporating visually-stunning choreography and emotive, real-life verbatim interviews, this contemporary version will rocket Ibsen’s famous tale into a hugely relevant re-telling for modern audiences.

Tickets for this event are €18/16conc. , with a special rate of €9 for those u18. All tickets will have a €1 Development Fee surcharge and are available from the Hawk’s Well Theatre box office on 071-91/61518 or book online at www. hawkswell.com

MINDING FRANKIE

On Friday the 1st of June, a theatrical production of Maeve Binchy’s last novel, Minding Frankie comes to the Hawk’s Well stage. The play follows the story of Noel Lynch, a man who is struggling with an alcohol addiction, when he gets a call from Stella, a girlfriend with whom he shared a drunken weekend. Stella is having Noel’s child; she is also dying from cancer. Noel must raise their daughter, Frankie. Social worker, Moira Tierney, has other ideas, and is prepared to do battle for custody of the child. In order to prevail, Noel must prove that he can fill a woman’s shoes, break all the stereotypes, and become the best mother than he can be. Along the way, he discovers that it takes a village to rear a child, or at least a street.

Maeve Binchy is one of those rare writers - like Dickens, Wilde, Shaw, Behan - whose work springs from their largerthan-life personalities. More so than other writers, their unique voices are captured in their work. This production of Minding Frankie once again makes Maeve’s voice available to all those who love her, and to those who will come to love her.

This show is produced by Breda Cashe, an independent theatre producer for over twenty years who has produced numerous shows in Ireland, the UK (including the West End), Australia, France and the US.

Minding Frankie has received great reviews from audiences and critics alike and this one-night performance in Sligo will be a heart-warming show for all lovers of both Maeve’s work and good theatre.
